Academic Scholarship in honour of Brother Fergus McArdle

Br. Fergus served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bethlehem University from September 2003 until June 2006. He was an energetic and forward-thinking academic who built strong relationships with other universities and encouraged the faculty to develop professionalism in their work. Br. Fergus, 58, was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland on the 22 nd of March in 1949.

Br. Fergus was fondly remembered by all who worked with him, “The mission of every teacher is to touch the heart of the people,” Brother Jack Curran, Vice President for Development said, referring to a principle of Jean Baptiste De La Salle, adding, “Brother Fergus was someone who realized this principle in his daily life.” Brother Fergus’ unique ability to engage with people elicited numerous messages of condolence and support, sent by government representatives, consulates, professors at universities, Brothers and other Lasallian colleagues, friends, alumni, benefactors and donors from all over the world.

It is in his memory that this scholarship was created, in the hopes that the passionate conviction with which this Brother from Ireland lived and worked, will continue, through the efforts of his fellow countrymen and Brothers. Dr. John Kelly, Chairman of FBU-I, has spent countless hours in his dedication to strengthening the enduring relationship between FBU-I and Bethlehem University, as well as serving as an advocate for the rights of Palestinian students. Through many meetings and sustained correspondance, Dr. Kelly has worked ardently with Bethlehem University administration to bring more opportunities to the University in hopes that the excellent quality of education at Bethlehem University will be enhanced and further developed by the knowledge and experience exchange, afforded by these relationships. Br. Peter Bray, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University says about Dr. Kelly and FBU-I that they "Have been instrumental to building the foundation for our success and you continue to be integral to our future. Tthe real impact will be felt year after year as it assists us in educating new generations of young leaders here in Palestine. Thank you."
