September
8th, 2003. On Monday, September 1, Bethlehem
University opened its doors for the 2003/ 2004 academic
year. 1,400 news students applied to Bethlehem University
this year. 700 students were accepted, out of which
600 have already registered. This in addition to 1,400
returning students. In all, enrollment stands at approximately
2,050 students.
The atmosphere is one of mixed hope and uncertainty,
given the political instability and the experience of
previous months and recent days. Right now relative
quiet in Bethlehem is allowing the University to start
in a normal fashion.
Preparations
are underway in the University to start a new major
in Computer and Information Technology, and the Digital
Media Center was inaugurated. Many people are busy preparing
for the 30th anniversary celebration of the founding
of Bethlehem University, scheduled for October 2003.
The military siege around Bethlehem continues to hinder
free access to the University. Faculty, students, and
staff have to wait at the checkpoints, and sometimes
they are not allowed to enter Bethlehem.
This academic year, as always,
Bethlehem University is facing the challenge with characteristic
perseverance, and a diligent endeavor not to lose one
single day of classes.
