Paul Maddison and International Pilgrim Group Visits
Bethlehem University March 19, 2004 On Friday, 19 March, Bethlehem University hosted Father
Paul Maddison, Parish Priest of St. Ives and Papworth,
Britain, along with pilgrims from Britain, USA, Spain,
Australia, and Ireland.
The guests had lunch in the University cafeteria with
two students: Ramzi Qumsiah and Rawan Khater. The students
spoke about daily life in Bethlehem, their challenges
and successes, as well as hopes and plans for the future.
Following lunch, Brother Vincent Malham, President-Vice
Chancellor, welcomed Father Paul and the Pilgrim Group
as they visited the historic Bethlehem Hall on campus.
Brother Vincent spoke about the significant role of
Bethlehem University in the Holy Land as the largest
employer in the Bethlehem area and in providing Palestinian
youth with hope for a better future – made possible
with the important support and encouragement from our
international friends and benefactors.
Brother David Scarpa, Director of Teaching Development
and La Sallian Mission, introduced a multimedia presentation
about Bethlehem University, and, along with Mr. George
Sahhar, Public Relations / Development Office, led
the group on a campus tour which included a visit to
the Water and Soil Environmental Research Unit; the
Palestinian Heritage Center, Turathuna; the University
Chapel; the Brother's Residence; and the scenic view
from the balcony of Bethlehem Hall. Mr. Sami El-Yousef,
Vice President for Finances and Planning joined the
group for a discussion about Bethlehem University and
its mission in the Holy Land.
