Poetry Reading by the Palestinian Poet Nathalie Handal

"Through literature, you enter worlds, and that incredible moment
when a novel, play or poem has just given you something,
made you aware of others, of yourself,
in a way so unknown to you, so magical and mysterious,
that you can only honor that instant
and realize that you have gone beyond the self, beyond the sacred drum."

Palestinian Poet Nathalie Handal

The Bethlehem University Dean of Students Office, in cooperation with the International Center of Bethlehem, organized “Poetry Reading” by the Palestinian Poet Nathalie Handal.  She visited the campus of Bethlehem University on Thursday, 23 Feb, where more than 150 faculty, staff and students eagerly listened to her magical words as she recited some of her poetry. Ms. Handal is a Palestinian poet, writer, playwright, director and producer who has lived in Europe, the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and other parts of the Arab world.  Reflecting on her multi-cultural perspective, Ms. Handal spoke with the University community about the strong influence of her Palestinian grandfather and the role of her education in France, England and the US.

During her afternoon poetry recital, Nathalie, with her great personality, enthusiasm and passion was able to capture the hearts and minds of the audience. She shared her life experiences through her poetry.  In particular, she showed strong feelings for the city of Bethlehem and fondly described her many journeys into the narrow streets and stone houses surrounded by olive, lemon, and orange trees, the smell of rose wood in the prayer beads, the beauty of the Nativity Church – memories which continue to roam in her mind and heart.

Following the poetry recital, Natalie and the University community engaged in a thoughtful discussion focusing on her Palestinian origins and life in the Diaspora.
