12 December 2007

A two day health fair aimed at raising public awareness among university and school students about health problems and prevention in the Bethlehem area took place at Bethlehem University Tuesday.

Organized by Bethlehem University’s Nursing and Health Sciences students and faculty under the slogan “Towards a Better Life Style”, the fair involved different health activities such as blood tests, HIV tests, and an introduction to the Body Mass Index System. In various discussions and presentations students, faculty and visitors explored the vital role that the nurse plays in society as an educator, researcher, coordinator and counselor.

“There was a very positive atmosphere of understanding and cooperation among the students during the preparation time and the exhibition itself. The students have worked diligently to make the day a success”, said Ms. Mariam Awad, the supervisor of this activity and a teacher in the Nursing Department at Bethlehem University.

The students prepared brochures asserting that healthy behavioral norms, prevention and systematic blood and physical examination tests are the most effective ways to discover a disease at an early stage. According to the brochure, medical studies show evidence that a healthy lifestyle is likely to prevent a disease from becoming life threatening.

A considerable number of local NGOs and health organizations, among them Bethlehem Public Health Center, Dar El-Kalimeh, Palestinian Osteoporosis Society,  Health Work Committees of Beit Sahour Medical Center, Elderly Club, Ibda and the Diabetes’s Friend Society participated in this activity. Additionally, a theater group from Jerusalem, Sanabel Theatre, performed a half-hour drama that addressed the difficult social conditions Palestinian families face, including gender and generation conflicts, violence against women, misuse of technology, and the large number of children in Palestinian families.

The Administration of Bethlehem University thanks the students of the faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences, teacher Ms. Mariam Awad and all participating organizations for their efforts in organizing this health fair, which is an extremely valuable contribution to raising public awareness of health concerns.
