Korean representatives visit bethlehem university

By Samar Sabat

Bethlehem University had a taste of East Asia recently when Mr. Won Sup Park, the Korean representative for the Palestinian Authority, visited for the second time since 2007. He was accompanied by Mr. Kang Hang Wook, Representative of Palestine Office from KOIKA (Korean Cooperation International Agency).

Mr. Park and Mr. Wook were greeted by members of the Bethlehem University community, including Vice President for Academic Affairs Brother Robert Smith and the Dean of the Business Administration Faculty Dr. Fadi Kattan.

They began their visit with a group photo in front of the Millennium Hall, followed by a visit to the Fuglister Lab to view the Korean-supplied computers and LCD projectors.  After this, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony there organized by Brother Neil, the Director of Instructional Technology and Brother Peter Bray, Bethlehem University’s new Vice Chancellor.

Br. Neil gave a presentation about the delivery of the computers and expressed his gratitude on behalf of Bethlehem University for the South Korean donations. "We also hope we can show that we are worthy recipients of the aid that we have received and we promise to use the equipment well,” he said.

His speech was followed by the unveiling of a plaque in commemoration of the generosity of the Korean donation to Bethlehem University.

Later in Furno Hall, Dr. Kattan introduced Mr. Park, who delivered an exciting and colorful presentation about Korean life, followed by a discussion about the relationship between Korea and Palestine.

Mr. Park showed a video about Korea which allowed Bethlehem University students a glimpse into traditional Korean home life, food, sport, crafts, and daily life of the Korean people.

He then gave a speech about the aspects of the relationship between Korea and Palestine, emphasizing the aid Korea can give to the Palestinian people. Through helping the Palestinians to create their own industry and improve their economical status, he expressed hope that independence could occur.

A question and answer discussion with the audience then followed, facilitated by Dr. Kattan and Mr. Rami Sabella.

Asked about Korea’s relationship with the Palestinians, Mr. Park said: “I believe that relationship has been successful. We appreciate the Palestinian efforts, and we hope to have the Palestinians know more about the Korean life and society.”
