Open Discussion in Bethlehem University on “Democracy and Palestinian Elections”

Bethlehem – Ya’coub Al-Atrash. As part of the activities of “Democracy Week,” the Bethlehem Office of the Ministry of Culture and the Legislative Council held an open discussion for University students on “Democracy and Palestinian Elections.” The event was held in Bethlehem Hall, with the participation of PLC Deputy Bishara Daoud, Dr. Thiab Ayyoush, Shawqi Al-Ayaseh, and Abdul-Nasser Abu Laban.
Mohammad Al-Diri, Director of the Bethlehem Office of the Ministry of Culture led the discussion. He welcomed the students and guests, and introduced the topic and raised a number of questions and issues pertaining to democracy, elections, intellectual and political pluralism, and the requirements of a successful democratic process in Palestine.
Discussion took place between the panelists and students. Topics addresses were: the Palestinian electoral system, role of the silent majority, role of women, performance of the Legislative Council that was elected more than nine years ago, efficiency of the Palestinian Authority, separation of powers, and the presidential, municipal, and local elections that took place.
The panelists responded in a positive manner to the questions raised by students. Frankness during the discussion reflected the extent of awareness and civic involvement among university students.
