DIPLOMA IN TRAVEL AGENCY MANAGEMENT

This program is designed to provide a basic training for those who wish to pursue a career in tourism, and/or the travel business. The courses are concerned with management in the tourism industry in the context of rapid growth and change. The course aims to help meet the industry’s needs for well-qualified managers who have a broad understanding of tourism management. It takes an integrative approach to tourism management which recognizes the diversity of management roles and careers within the industry.

Bethlehem University is an authorized Training Center for the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Students of this program are also prepared to sit for the IATA/UFTAA Standard Diploma examinations.

Note: IATA examination fees are payable by the students.

Description of courses

TRPC 151 IATA Standard Course I (Cr. 3)

This course will give the students a broad understanding of travel agency and airline operations. The students will become familiar with industry regulations, codes, geography, tour programs, visa and health requirements, customer service and sales techniques. This course continues through four semesters and also teaches students economic and physical geography, as well as how to plan itineraries by air and time differences.

TRPC 152 IATA Standard Course II (Cr. 3)

Students will study airline codes and definitions, aircraft and in-flight services, airport facilities and special passengers, automations, baggage, international regulations, and travel guides.

TRPC 153 IATA Standard Course III (Cr. 3)

This course will prepare the students in two areas: Air Fares, and Ticketing and Tour Programs. Students will become familiar with tariff manuals, terms and definitions, currency regulations, round and circle trip fares, journeys in different classes, ticketing instructions, and BSP procedures. They will gain a broad understanding of types, terms, and definitions of tour programs and how and why tours are produced, booking conditions, and reservation procedures.

TRPC 154 IATA Standard Course IV (Cr. 3)

This course will prepare the students in the two areas of Travel Formalities and Customers Services and Selling Techniques. Students will study the types of customers, their needs and expectations, how to create good customer relations the selling process and making recommendations and closing the sale. Travel formalities include passport and health certificates, taxes, customs and currency, insurance.

TRPC 303 Human Resource Management (Cr. 3)

An understanding of management techniques and practices is essential for students to embark on their management careers. Of particular relevance to people-based service and manufacturing industries is an understanding of human resource management. It is also important that students have the underpinning theories to enable them to gain the maximum possible educational benefit from their period of work. The course aims to provide an understanding of the role of the management of people at work in theory and practice. It is designed to provide a specific body of knowledge in human resource management. It will also provide student with the skills to manage themselves on their supervised work experience and to understand and appreciate particular management styles, structures, and culture which they may experience.

TOUR 113 Travel Agency Management I (Cr. 3)

This course covers skills and procedures to secure successful travel agency personnel and how to start a travel agency as well as the application of fundamental principles and successful practices in developing clientele.

TOUR 117 Outgoing Tourism I (Cr. 2)

In this course detailed guidance is prepared in order to acquaint the students with the outgoing tourism and means of transportation on land and sea.

TOUR 118 Outgoing Tourism II (Cr. 2)

This course covers in brief, information about world hotels, main tourist sites and attractions in different countries. Moreover, it covers a brief analysis of regional framework and specific regions of the world.

TOUR 121, 122, 222, 272 Air Transport Ticketing I, II, III, IV (Cr. 3 each)

These courses deal with the role and functions of international bodies, travel terminology, travel airline guides, as well as reservation procedures, fare calculations and ticketing.

TOUR 125, 127, 227, 228 Incoming Tourism I, II, III, IV (Cr. 2,2)

These courses offer a thorough study of the functions of wholesale touring operation. They include tour operation, costing and contracting, transport companies, hiring tour guides, etc. Introduction to touring and sight seeing through slide shows are also presented.

TOUR 133 Geography of Palestine (Cr. 3)

The physical, political and economic Geography of Palestine is covered.

TOUR 211 Travel Agency Management II (Cr. 3)

This course is designed to expose the students to the accounting systems found operative in the travel agencies.

TOUR 212, 252 Travel Agency Management III, IV (Cr. 3,3)

These courses present an analysis for the purpose of planning at various levels in travel agency operation.

TOUR 217 Outgoing Tourism III (Cr. 2)

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of transportation, railways, caravans, ferries, cruises with detailed maps. Car rental agencies, shipping guidebooks and how to use continental timetables are also covered.

TOUR 218 Outgoing Tourism IV (Cr. 2)

This course involves programming and costing for outgoing groups and individuals.

TOUR 162, 162, 261, 262 French for Tourism I, II, III, IV (Cr. 2 each)

The objectives of these courses are to integrate former learning and to improve reading and writing skills and conversation.

Selected field trips cover a wide variety of interesting places for tourists.
