On 8 May 2025, Bethlehem University proudly hosted the 8th edition of its Creative Writing Awards and Readings—an annual event that continues to spotlight the rich creativity and talent of its student body.
Organized by the English Department, this year’s competition marked a milestone with the highest number of submissions in the contest’s history. Students from a wide range of majors—not just English—submitted original works in short fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, offering a vibrant mix of voices, styles, and perspectives that reflected the depth and diversity of the University’s academic community.
The event, held in Furno Hall at the Millennium Building, was coordinated by Ms. Paola Handal and Mr. Layth Awwad and attended by faculty, staff, students, and guests. Finalists were invited to read their work aloud, transforming the hall into a space of imagination, honesty, and reflection. The readings ranged from powerful personal narratives to lyrical poetry and compelling stories—each leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Following careful review by a panel of judges, winners were announced in each category. In short fiction, Ayah Jaber took first place for “Let Dr. Henderson Know,” with Entesar Mograby placing second for “The Last Day of Autumn,” and Mahmoud A. Leissa earning third place with “A Lustrous Path.” In poetry, Khader Qassis won first place, followed by Shahd Maraqa in second and Zahra Tawayha in third, with honorable mentions awarded to Salam Demes, Yara Abu Diab, and Mai Fakhoury. In nonfiction, Taymaa Fteha received an honorable mention.
The event concluded with a recognition ceremony, where Ms. Hanadi Younan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Chairperson of the English Department, presented the winners with certificates and commemorative gifts, alongside the competition organizers.
This beloved tradition at Bethlehem University continues to inspire and uplift, encouraging students to explore their voices and share their stories. It reflects the University’s broader mission: to provide a transformative education that empowers students to think critically, express themselves creatively, and serve their communities with passion and purpose.
To all the students who submitted their work, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating their achievements: thank you for making this year’s event a resounding success. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.
