Ms. Nadia Bany Shamsa, Director of Brother Vincent Malham Center, in collaboration with the Bethlehem University Zbierski Library, hosted a vibrant cultural activity for international students at the University.
Ms. Elizabeth Dsouza, Library Director, warmly welcomed everyone and gave a brief introduction about the library and its role in supporting learning and research, as well as its initiatives to promote Palestinian culture and heritage among students.
The event began with a discussion circle in the George Nasra Center for Palestinian Heritage – Turathuna Center, where the library team, Ms. Mirna Zougbhi and Ms. Sana Salsa, led a captivating session on traditional women’s clothing for weddings and engagements.
The presentation featured the Thob Abu Qutbeh (dress), Satteh (hat), Sab’Arwah (necklace), Waqayat Al-Darahim (dowry hat adorned with Turkish coins), and various head coverings, showcasing the unique elegance and fine craftsmanship that distinguish Bethlehem women’s attire from that of other regions.
The session captured the students’ attention and inspired lively participation. This was followed by the screening of the short film Old Bethlehem, which beautifully depicted the city’s historic streets and the traditional garments once worn by men and women in their daily lives.
Next, the students attended an engaging presentation on Palestinian heritage tools, also conducted by the library team. The display sparked enthusiasm and cross-cultural discussions, especially among the Korean students, who noted remarkable similarities between Palestinian and Korean heritage tools, particularly in pottery, grain grinding, and food preservation techniques.
The cultural journey continued with a visit to the Bethlehem University Archives, where Sister Rose offered a fascinating tour. She shared the archives’ valuable collection of historical documents, photographs, and records that chronicle the university’s development from its founding to the present day.
The morning concluded with a warm and joyful gathering at the Brother Vincent Malham Center, where Ms. Bany Shamsa graciously hosted a traditional Palestinian lunch for the students, library staff, and teachers. Everyone enjoyed mujadara drizzled with olive oil. The meal sparked appreciation for the depth and diversity of Palestinian cuisine, which caters to all tastes. The gathering ended on a sweet note with Arabic coffee and harisa dessert, creating a heartfelt atmosphere of friendship, cultural exchange, and celebration.
It was truly a memorable and heartwarming cultural gathering, made even more special by Ms. Nadia’s hospitality, which overflowed with warmth, generosity, and love.
