University College Dublin

We are delighted to welcome 4 Student Senate leaders from Bethlehem University in Palestine to Ireland on June 1—6 as guests of the UCD Students' Union.
•      4 Student Senate leaders from Bethlehem University in Palestine will visit Ireland June 1—6 as guests of the University College Dublin Student Union. The visit was arranged by the Friends of Bethlehem University in Ireland (www.fbui.ie) and student leaders nationwide are supporting it.

•      Mira Amro, Osama Mohammad Hasan Jundi, Elias Khalilieh, Lara Kasbari are the names of the Student Senate leaders visiting from Bethlehem University. They will be accompanied by Professor Jamil Khader, Dean of Research.

•      Founded in 1973, Bethlehem University is a Catholic University open to students of all faiths and nationalities; its current student population is approximately 70% Muslim, 25% Christian. It is acknowledged as an “Oasis of Peace in a troubled land”.

•      University College Dublin has had a very close involvement with Bethlehem University since its early days, when many UCD staff spent months in Bethlehem assisting in its development.

•      This is the first time that Bethlehem University students have been invited to visit Ireland. Mobility restrictions routinely debar them from participating in any international academic activities outside Palestine.

•      The hope for this visit is to establish a good connection between Bethlehem University student representatives and their counterparts in Ireland. It is important that these students be involved in international student affairs and EU programmes and this visit will hopefully open up a few options.

UCD Student Union President Feargal Hynes is coordinating in conjunction with a committee involving student leaders and academic staff from other Irish universities. The visit is also supported by the educational trade unions, the IFUT and TUI.
