Modern Language Association (MLA) Members at Bethlehem University

A group of members from the Modern Language Association (MLA) visited Bethlehem University on Tuesday, 21 June, 2016. The MLA is a professional association for Scholars and Schools of Humanities in North America. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the challenges faced by members of academic and research institutions of higher education, as well as the student populace.
Notable scholars from the University of California at Davis, the University of Toronto, the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Alberta were part of the informal delegation visiting Bethlehem University.
The visitors met with the Deans ,Chairpersons, and the Faculty Members of the various faculties and departments at Bethlehem University, as well as the administrative staff. Upon their arrival, they viewed a short introductory film about Bethlehem University and were then taken on a tour of the BU campus.
Their primary goal however, was to spend time with students, faculty, and staff, in order to attain a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with providing higher education in Palestine.
The visitors viewed a digital story, prepared by Bethlehem University Students, which dealt with the daily challenges they faced due to restrictions on mobility.
The attendees engaged in group discussions about the various experiences of students and staff members of the different departments and the challenges and limitations they face as academics in a region of political turmoil.
The MLA group members then visited the Natural History Museum and learned about the dangers to the environment within the local region.
The day came to a close when the group had lunch with the Dean of Arts, Ms. Hanadi Younan, and the Executive Vice President, Dr. Michael Sansur.
