Generalate – International Board of Regents of Bethlehem University Meets in Rome

Bethlehem University was founded in 1973 as a joint venture of the Vatican and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. It was the first registered University in the West Bank and still the only Catholic University in the Holy Land. More than 16,000 students have graduated from Bethlehem University; today there are more than 3,200 undergraduate and graduate students.

On January 26th and 27th members of International Board of Regents of Bethlehem University from: Australia, France, Israel, India, Italy, New Zealand, Palestine, Scotland, South Korea, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United States gathered for their semi-annual board meeting.

DAY ONE: Professor Bart McGettrick, Chair of the Board of Regents welcomed the members, Br. Peter Bray, Vice Chancellor of the University outlined the topics to be addressed during the meeting and there were three teleconference presentations from Bethlehem:

  • Professor Jamil Khader, Dean of Research , discussed the role research plays in fostering the academic life of Bethlehem University
  • Moussa Rabadi, Director of the Institute of Community Partnership (ICP) discussed how the ICP serves the people of Palestine through education.
  • Mr Nagib Nasser, Engineer of Bethlehem University provided an update of the Facility Master Plan highlighting progress being made on building projects for:

o    Nursing
o    Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism
o    Visitor Center
o    Fitness Center

Day one concluded with Mass celebrated by Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem and a reception and dinner hosted by the Superior General, Br. Robert Schieler FSC.

DAY TWO: Committees met to discuss reports from Vice Presidents for:

  • Academics, Dr. Irene Hazou
  • Development, Br. Stephen Tuohy
  • Finance, Mr. Youil Ananstas
