Brother Peter Bray, FSC, EdD, vice chancellor of Bethlehem University, the first university established in Palestine and the only Christian University in the Holy Land, will receive an honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at the annual De La Salle Week Convocation at Saint Mary’s College of California.
The Convocation is the centerpiece of a weeklong celebration of the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers and founder of the Christian Brothers and the College’s Lasallian heritage and mission.

During the campus-wide celebration, Saint Mary’s students, Christian Brothers, faculty and staff come together to commemorate and increase awareness of the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The Convocation takes place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the Saint Mary’s College Chapel at 1928, St. Mary’s Road, Moraga, Calif. 94575.

"We are extremely honored by Brother Peter Bray’s visit to Saint Mary’s,” said President James Donahue. “Brother Peter’s role as the vice chancellor at Bethlehem University reminds us as educators that regardless of what happens outside of this campus, the education of our students is our utmost priority. Despite being in an environment of military occupation, political struggle and, sometimes tragically, violence, Bethlehem University is an intellectual beacon of hope that thrives on and fosters an atmosphere of learning for the young people it serves.”

In addition to the Convocation, during De La Salle Week, the College will hold its second annual Lasallian Research Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in the College’s Soda Center. The symposium features Saint Mary’s faculty presenting on topics such as examining trauma in former foster youth who are now parents and exploring self-acceptance through the performing arts. Additionally, Mike Daniels, the new director of education for the De LaSalle Christian Brothers San Francisco/New Orleans District will participate in an idea generation session with engaged Saint Mary’s faculty and staff about the research and resource needs of the District’s 20 Lasallian schools.

Brother Peter assumed leadership of Bethlehem University in February 2009 and brings more than 30 years of Catholic education experience as a teacher, consultant, administrator, and expert in leadership and educational systems. Prior to Bethlehem, he was the director and CEO of the Wellington Catholic Education Center in New Zealand where he led the creation of a master’s level educational partnership with the Australian Catholic University and the utilization of online delivery for the Center’s educational programs.

As a teacher and education consultant, Brother Peter has worked around the globe in schools and universities in Australia, England, Ireland, the Philippines, United States, and Turkey. Additionally, Brother Peter has advanced Catholic formation and Lasallian education while serving on a variety of boards and committees, including the Wellington Archdiocesan Synod organizing committee, and as a member of the Board of Trustees for De La Salle College, Auckland in his native New Zealand. He was also a member of the Australian Council for Educational Administration and was elected to the Provincial Council of the De La Salle Brothers in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.

Brother Peter holds a doctorate in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego with a focus on leadership approaches that facilitate change in educational institutions. In addition, he earned a master’s in Educational Administration as well as diplomas in Adult Education and Religious Studies.

De La Salle Week 2017 includes a special Mass at 5 p.m. on April 23, 2017 which will be presided over by the Bishop of Oakland, Most Reverend Michael Barber, SJ. This special liturgy includes the celebration of seven Saint Mary’s students receiving the Catholic Church’s sacraments of initiation.
