BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The EU-funded project Networks of Mediterranean Youth (NET-MED Youth), organized by UNESCO, held Youth Day at Bethlehem University on Wednesday in the southern occupied West Bank.

According to a statement released by the university, the event “provided a platform of dialogue and policy debate among key actors working in the field of Youth and relevant decision and policy-makers to exchange ideas and views on issues and priorities of concern for youth in Palestine.”

During the event, four roundtable discussions were held, which presented “several key and unique studies” by NET-MED Youth, which highlighted issues for youth in relation to “policy and decision making, media, employment, and civic participation.”

Hundreds of students from Bethlehem University, Birzeit University, and An-Najah University participated in the event, which was also attended by Palestinian ministers, UN and EU representatives, members of universities and academic institutions, and a number of other individuals from national and international organizations.

Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University Peter Bray said that the event “highlighted the importance of quality higher education and preparing Palestine's youth to be committed and capable critical thinkers who can become leaders in their society.”

Minister of Education Sabri Saidam noted that the ministry had taken “big steps” towards advancing youth employment by adapting education to labor market needs.

For UNESCO’s part, their representative to Palestine Lodovico Folin Calabi said he was “proud to support Palestinian youth engaging as active citizens of their society, as the development of Palestine and of any society will also depend on how youth can effectively become a driving force of positive change.”
