University Community Remembers Brother Robert Daszkiewicz in Memorial Mass

Robert DaszkiewiczThe University community celebrated the life and remembered the dedication of Brother Robert Daszkiewicz, FSC in a memorial mass on Thursday, 18 March 2010 in the Chapel of the Divine Child. Brother Robert passed away on 20 January 2010.

Originally from New England, Brother Robert served at Bethlehem University three different times for a total of 12 years. From 1979 until 1983 he served as the University’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. He taught in the Faculty of Education during his second stay, from 1985 until 1987, but he spent the most time teaching in the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism from 1995 until 2001.

Presiding over the memorial mass, Father Peter DuBrul, S.J., Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, remembered Brother Robert’s very special sense of humor, his excellent cooking and his love of surprises.

Brother Robert also had an inherent authority, Father Peter said. One day, during the Israeli siege of the Church of the Nativity (and of Bethlehem) in 2002, Brother Robert insisted on bearing witness. So he brought a chair outside the University gates and sat watching the Israeli tanks pass by. “His presence was very expressive,” Father Peter recalled.

In November 2009 Brother Robert was in Bethlehem a final time. “He had fulfilled one of his last wishes: To visit Bethlehem again,” wrote Brother Robert’s brother. “On Christmas day he had to be sent to a nursing home. When he passed away on 20 January 2010, he seemed to die peacefully.

May the souls of Brother Robert and all the faithful departed rest in peace.
