Knights and Ladies of The Holy Sepulcher/Ireland Meet Gaza Students Via Video Conference

GazaLieutenant Nicholas McKenna led 53 Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher, Ireland to a visit to Bethlehem University on Wednesday, 26 April 2010. The aim of their visit was to tour Bethlehem University campus and meet with its students.

Additionally, during their visit, the group members took the opportunity to meet our students and graduates in Gaza via video conference.

The three Gaza Students, Odeh Al-Jeldeh, Dana Tarazi, and Jawdat Michael, spoke to the visitors and explained the reason they chose to study at Bethlehem University, “I believe that it is my right  to study at any university I choose,” said Odeh Al-Jeldeh, “it is my right to education and right to freedom of movement,” he added.

GazaGraduated in a special ceremony of her own on 11 January 2010, after being deported from Bethlehem to Gaza a few months before her graduation, alumna Berlanty Azzam was there as a symbol of resistance and model of Palestinian strong spirit, “It was a spirit uplifting for me to have the University’s continued support and encouragement until I continued my studies and got my degree,” she said.

Our graduate of occupational therapy, Muhammad Azaiza (BU’08) also joined our students in the video conference. Muhammad is currently working with GISHA (The Israeli Legal Center for Freedom of Movement) as the Gaza Field Coordinator. He is now working on applying and following up on permissions for the Gaza students to come to Bethlehem University, “I am interested in this job because I would like more Gaza students to have the same experience as I did,” Azaiza said, “it was enjoyable and educational experience,” he added.

Mr. John Bosco O’Hagan, one of the group members, emphasized the importance of what those students and the University do in order to get quality higher education despite the Israeli restrictions, “your families and friends must be proud of what you do,” Mr. O’Hagan said. “Please be assured that you will always have our support and encouragement,” he added.
