Third Francophonie Week at Bethlehem University

Francophonie weekBy: Anne Debeuckelaere and Virginie Lucas - French teachers at Bethlehem University

On March 19th 2011, the third Francophonie festival took place at the Institute of Hotel Management. This event is a result of a partnership between Bethlehem University and the French Alliance of Bethlehem. Francophonie describes the phenomenon of speaking French, the primary language used by 200,000,000 people worldwide and the secondary language of an additional 72,000,000!

Francophonie weekAs in previous years, three competitions were organized for the French students of Bethlehem University and the French Alliance: a cooking competition (French appetizers), a photography and arts competition: (photographs, drawings, paintings), and a competition of francophone and artistic talents (songs, music, poetry, literature, embroidery).

On the morning of March 19th, while a group of students was decorating the room, others were preparing their appetizers: At 1 p.m., about 100 guests joined them to begin the party. The event began with opening words from Dr. Irene Hazou - Assistant Vice President for Academic affairs of Bethlehem University and Ms. Abla Mubarak, - member of the administration committee of the French Alliance.

Francophonie weekFollowing the opening, judges began evaluating the student's work in the different competitions. These judges were a mix of  representatives of Bethlehem University, of the  French Consulate in Jérusalem, and the French Alliance of Bethlehem. Awards were kindly donated by Mr. Benoit Tadie, Conselor for Cooperation and Cultural Action in Jerusalem. This wonderful afternoon ended with the French version of the song Aicha, sung by the whole assembly.

We warmly thank all of our students who enthusiastically took part in the Francophonie day, as well as Bethlehem University , the French Consulate and the French Alliance for their support. We also thank all our francophonie friends who attended the festival. The success and fun had bodes extremely well for future celebrations such as Francophonie 2012 !Francophonie week
