Department of Religious Studies

Sr. Virginie Habib

Sr. Virginie Habib, a Rosary Sister born in Lebanon, has been teaching catechesis to children and adults in the Holy Land since 1987. Her position as an anthropology teacher in 1995 for the St. Cyril program in Jerusalem was her first connection to the Religious Studies Department at Bethlehem University where, eleven years later, she began teaching two courses for Religious Studies students minoring in catechesis.

Sr. Virginie is one of the Department's most qualified teachers in terms of education and experience in the area of catechesis. She has a Masters degree in Religious Sciences from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and a second Masters in Science of Education with a specialization in Youth Pastoral and Catechesis from the Faculty of Sciences of Education at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. She has worked closely with Fr. Rafiq Khoury, whom she considers to be the primary reference in any pastoral activity or project at the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem.  In 2005 His Beatitude the Patriarch Michel Sabbah assigned Sr. Virginie to be in charge of the Catechetical Center of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. One of her responsibilities at the Center is to promote catechesis at Christian schools through activities, competitions, retreats, preparing educational tools and other actions, and follow the formation of catechists. For example, in the Fall of 2007, Sr. Virginie organized a program for 14 catechists who were practicing their ministries in catechesis and teaching in Christian schools without the proper catechetical qualifications to become catechists.

In addition to serving the Latin Patriarchate and teaching at Bethlehem University, Sr. Virginie also teaches in the Rosary Sisters' novitiate where she prepares novices who will begin their ministries in catechesis so that they will have the basics in this field. Also in 2007, Sr. Virginie is teaching a course entitled "Introduction to Pastoral Theology" to seminarians at the Franciscan College in Jerusalem.

When describing her time in the Religious Studies Department at Bethlehem University, Sr. Virginie said, "As a teacher in this Department I do my best to prepare the courses entrusted to me, so that I give my students the best of what I have," adding, "One goal is to maintain the high academic standards of the learning process in this institution." She went on to say that teaching religion is how she has chosen to fulfill Jesus' command to preach the Good News for all nations. "Teaching has always been my first concern and area of interest," Sr. Virginie said.
