USA – Conference Recognizes Bethlehem University

From: La

Bethlehem University was prominently featured at a September 9 conference entitled Religious Freedom & Human Rights: Path to Peace in the HolyLand – That All May Be Free, held at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. The gathering was co-sponsored by Catholic University, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Catholic Relief Services, with more than 200 attendees.

Vice Chancellor Brother Peter Bray, FSC was the luncheon speaker and addressed his remarks on the difficulties his students and staff face as they deal with daily commutes through multiple checkpoints staffed by the Israeli Army. Bethlehem University is within the land administered by the Palestinian Authority, but Bethlehem is almost completely surrounded by the separation wall. Bethlehem University is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Two recent graduates of Bethlehem University, one Christian, one Muslim, detailed the challenges involved in getting an education, and in daily life, in occupied Palestine. Lubna Alzaroo, is now a Fulbright scholar attending the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, and Nagbib Kasbary has been in the United States on an internship at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, CA.
