The English Department’s Easter Celebration: A Day of Unity and Community

This Easter, the student committee of the English Department at Bethlehem University hosted an event that celebrated unity and shared values among students from different backgrounds. The committee, initiated by Layth R. Awwad, includes nine students from across all levels of the English Language, Literature, and Communications Program. This first event, held on the nursing rooftop, brought together students and faculty from all years for a fun and meaningful gathering.

The event fostered a sense of community as students came together to discuss Easter traditions, participate in activities like an egg painting contest, and enjoy each other’s company. It was a perfect example of how people from diverse backgrounds can connect and celebrate together, reinforcing the spirit of harmony within the university.

Amer Naje and Jeries Al-Jamal, members of the student committee, painted an egg together, with Jeries saying, “This Easter egg isn’t just a tradition—it’s a reminder of how we can come together, share, and laugh.”

Salam Demes, a member of the student committee, was excited about the event’s success: “Being part of the English Department committee has been amazing. Today was all about getting to know each other better and mixing the different year groups. It was great to see everyone connect.”

Nadin Mousa reflected on the event’s significance: “Today was a beautiful reminder that we don’t just live side by side—we live together, celebrating our differences and finding common ground.”

Sulaf Salman, another committee member, shared her thoughts: “For me, Easter is all about new beginnings. It was fun getting to know new people and making connections.”

Donia Dibi, who was experiencing the event for the first time, added: “It was such a fun vibe today, and I learned things about Easter for the first time!”

Yasmeen Nasr, while not celebrating Easter herself, expressed her respect for the occasion: “It’s not part of my faith, but I truly respect the meaning Easter holds. Happy Easter to everyone celebrating!”

Tala Hussein shared her insight: “Learning about other people’s beliefs doesn’t take away from who we are—it reminds us of how vast and diverse the world is.”

As the event unfolded, it became clear that this was more than just a celebration of Easter—it was a powerful reminder of the values Bethlehem University holds dear: unity, understanding, and mutual respect. Students came together, not just to celebrate, but to learn more about each other’s cultures and traditions. It was a simple yet meaningful example of the harmonious coexistence of Muslim and Christian communities in Palestine.

Mr. Awwad encouraged the creation of this initiative, reflecting: “It was beautiful seeing students from all years coming together, some of them meeting for the first time. When we, as teachers, arrived at the event, we saw what truly makes Bethlehem University special—the community.”

Ms. Hanadi Younan, Chairperson of the English Department, commented, ”Such activities showcase the promise of Bethlehem University as it prepares graduates who are characterized by their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Gaining an education is not only acquiring knowledge, it aims to help students open their eyes to the beauty of the diversity that characterizes Palestine and the Palestinians. Most importantly, the activity was envisioned and implemented by students themselves. I am very proud of them.”
