OT Students Engage in Problem-Based Learning at Karmal Psychiatric Hospital

On Tuesday, 15 April 2025, first- and third-year students from Bethlehem University’s Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy participated in a transformative academic experience at Karmal Psychiatric Hospital in Bethlehem. The visit, inspired by the University’s Academic Innovation Hub, featured a problem-based learning (PBL) approach that deepened students’ understanding of mental health care.

Hosted by Ms. Dyala Awadeh, Head of Department at Karmal Hospital, and Ms. Ala Zboun, Senior Occupational Therapy Supervisor, the session provided a dynamic environment for students to bridge theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. Students conducted research on major mental health conditions, presented their findings, and engaged in role-playing exercises designed to highlight the signs and symptoms associated with various psychiatric disorders.

This immersive learning experience underscores Bethlehem University’s commitment to delivering education that is experiential, student-centered, and socially impactful. Through initiatives like these, students not only gain critical academic and clinical skills but also develop a deeper sense of empathy, leadership, and service — qualities essential to building stronger, more resilient communities.
