On Friday, 2 May 2025, the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (PIBS) – Bethlehem University marked International Compost Awareness Week with a hands-on educational activity for children focused on composting and soil health.
The session introduced children to the basics of composting, showing how everyday organic waste—such as fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and dry leaves—can be transformed into nutrient-rich material that supports healthy plant growth. They learned what items can go into a compost pile, how the decomposition process works, and why composting is an important tool for reducing waste and protecting the environment.
Children took part in practical activities, including sorting compostable materials, helping build compost piles, and applying compost to the PIBS garden. These experiences helped them see the impact of composting firsthand and encouraged thoughtful discussion about sustainability.
This activity is part of PIBS’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and connect children with nature through engaging, educational experiences rooted in local biodiversity and sustainability practices.
