Bethlehem University proudly celebrates the inspiring message of solidarity shared by alumna Honey Thaljieh (BU ’06) during a special event organized by Athletic Club Bilbao at its San Mamés Stadium in Spain on Saturday, 4 October 2025, ahead of its La Liga match against Real Mallorca.
Held in partnership with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the event was a moving tribute to the Palestinian people and a reminder of the power of sport to build bridges of humanity, dignity, and peace, values that lie at the heart of Bethlehem University’s mission.
With one powerful call, “End the genocide.”, the ceremony honored the resilience and spirit of the Palestinian people. Among the guests were eleven Palestinian refugees residing in the Basque Country, UNRWA representatives, and Honey Thaljieh, former captain and co-founder of the Palestinian Women’s National Football Team, now serving as Public Relations Manager at FIFA in Zurich.
This initiative was inspired by Thaljieh’s appointment as Athletic Club’s ambassador in 2023. Through this gesture, the club sought to express its solidarity with her and with the people of Palestine.
A graduate of Bethlehem University’s Shucri Ibrahim Dabdoub Faculty of Business Administration, Thaljieh continues to embody the University’s spirit of leadership and service through her advocacy for women’s empowerment, equality, and representation in global sports. During the emotional ceremony, she and the Palestinian delegation received a standing ovation from thousands of fans as the stadium lights glowed in the colors of the Palestinian flag, and banners called for freedom, peace, and justice.
Honey’s journey, from playing football in the streets of Bethlehem to standing on one of Europe’s most prominent stages, reflects determination, courage, and faith. Reflecting on her path, she shared:
“Bethlehem University opened many doors for me. I was really supported here and pushed to develop my talents. It has been a huge blessing in my life, the first steppingstone to this adventure.”
Her leadership and achievements continue to inspire Bethlehem University students and graduates, demonstrating how education, passion, and perseverance can break barriers and create global impact.
Stories like Honey’s remind us that every gift to Bethlehem University empowers young women and men to rise as leaders who bring light, dignity, and hope to their communities—and to the world.
