Bethlehem University Students Explore the Symbolism of Courage and Freedom in “In the Time of the Butterflies”

On 23 October 2025, the Zbierski Library at Bethlehem University hosted an inspiring student-led reading session centered on Julia Alvarez’s acclaimed novel In the Time of the Butterflies.

Through the novel’s rich imagery, participants explored how the butterfly symbolizes transformation — from struggle to liberation — reflecting the courage and sacrifice of the four Mirabal sisters who stood fearlessly against oppression.

The session opened with welcoming remarks from Ms. Elizabeth Dsouza, Library Director, who introduced the facilitator, Huda Adi, a fourth-year English Literature student. With her engaging storytelling and thoughtful reflections, Huda guided participants through a moving discussion that brought the story’s themes of bravery, resilience, and freedom to life.

The conversation was vibrant and heartfelt, leaving everyone inspired by the enduring legacy of the “Butterflies” and the power of literature to illuminate human strength and hope.

Special thanks were extended to Ms. Sana Salsa for her valuable support and to all who contributed to making this literary gathering a memorable and meaningful experience.
