The Dean of Research and the Research Council held a webinar titled, “Environmental research leading to conservation and sustainability in Palestine,” Thursday, December 16, 2021.

Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh and Mr. Elias Handal, from the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability, provided an overview of the research activities, educational programs, and other outreach plans they have been organizing at PIBS in the last few years.

They also discussed the research they have done at PIBS and the wide range of topics they have explored. They noted that their research is multidisciplinary and that it is the result of collaboration with various researchers from Palestine, the region, and around the world.

Such an emphasis on multidisciplinary research and collaboration made it possible for the Institute team to publish two papers per month on average and this number increases yearly.

Prof Qumsiyeh and Mr. Handal explained the importance of the research they have conducted and the ways in which it feeds into projects like revamping Palestinian environmental laws. Moreover, they addressed the role PIBS is playing to formulate a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for Palestine.

Faculty members from various departments, faculties, and institutes attended the meeting. Prof Qumsiyeh encouraged faculty members to visit the Institute and museum and utilize their sources. He also expressed an interest in forming research clusters with various departments at the university to develop new research proposals and apply for international grants.
