On October 1, 2023, Bethlehem University marked its 50th jubilee, celebrating the impact it has made on the lives of more than 20,000 students over five decades in Palestine. The university hosted a number of events to mark the occasion.

Brother Superior General Armin Luistro, FSC, and Brother General Councilor Chris Patiño, FSC, were present for the celebrations. Brother Armin shared this video in honor of the jubilee.

Bethlehem University was founded in 1973 as the first university in the Holy Land through a joint venture between the Vatican and the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools following the historic visit of Pope Paul VI to the Holy Land in 1964.

A number of Brothers from the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) have served at Bethlehem University over the past five decades, and Bethlehem has been closely linked with RELAN in a number of ways.

“The relationship born between RELAN and Bethlehem University because of Brothers who generously responded to the needs in the Holy Land, Palestinian young people in particular, exemplifies the gift of the ‘pioneering’ spirit of Lasallians,” shared Brother Chris. “At a time when One La Salle is emphasized by the 46th General Chapter, the 50th anniversary of Bethlehem University is a reminder that our global Lasallian family can impact societies and foster renewal by responding courageously to the needs of the mission.”

As Bethlehem University commemorates this important occasion, it also recognizes the accomplishments of Brother Peter Bray, FSC, who is stepping down after 15 years as vice chancellor. The Brother Peter Bray, FSC campaign has been established to honor Brother Peter’s commitment and ensure the university’s future. Donations will support endowed professorships in climate, education, engineering, and nursing. Donations can be made online or by mail to:
