Bethlehem University proudly secured second place in the final round of the National University Debate League, held on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, in Jericho’s Tourist Village. The event brought together over 150 attendees, including representatives from official and international institutions and students, with participation from four Palestinian universities: Bethlehem University, Birzeit University, An-Najah National University, and Palestine Technical University – Khadoorie.
The event was organized by the Office of the Dean of Students at Bethlehem University as part of an initiative to promote critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement among youth.
Dr. Mohammad Awad, Dean of Students at Bethlehem University, opened the day with welcoming remarks, emphasizing that the Debate League was far more than a student activity, it served as a space for free dialogue, a platform for critical thinking, and an opportunity to promote a culture of expression and respect for differing opinions.
Following his remarks, Mr. Nader Atta, Democratic Governance & Quality Services at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the official sponsor of the Debate Club, spoke about the importance of supporting such initiatives that empower young people to engage thoughtfully and actively in their communities.
Dr. Basri Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, also addressed the audience, underlining the role of such events in building a strong Palestinian society. He praised the dedication of the participants and supporting institutions and emphasized the importance of listening to students’ voices and involving them more in decision-making processes.
Mr. Ahmad Dirieh, representing Lahza Debate Training Company, provided instructions and formally launched the debate rounds.
In the semi-final round, Bethlehem University competed against Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, while Birzeit University debated An-Najah National University. The first topic debated was: “This house believes that the migration of Palestinian minds is unpatriotic.”
Bethlehem University and An-Najah National University advanced to the final round, where they debated the statement: “This house believes that granting students a greater role in university decision-making improves the quality of education.”
At the end of the event, An-Najah National University was awarded first place, while Bethlehem University took home second place. The participants were praised for the depth of discussion, clarity of arguments, and their demonstration of respectful, constructive dialogue throughout the competition.
This achievement reflects Bethlehem University’s ongoing commitment to nurturing student leadership, empowering youth, and fostering a culture of academic excellence and civic responsibility.
