Dr. Suhair Lolas-Hamameh, from the Department of Applied Sciences at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Engineering – Bethlehem University, participated in the 13th Palestinian International Conference of Laboratory Medicine. She served as a member of the Scientific Evaluation Committee, which also included Dr. Yacoub Al-Ashhab (Committee Chair), Dr. Ihab Al-Ansari and Ms. Reem Dweik.
The committee received special recognition from the conference organizers for adopting clear and comprehensive evaluation criteria that incorporated well-balanced classifications and percentages, in line with the diverse scientific fields and categories represented at the conference.
In addition, Dr. Suhair delivered a lecture presenting her ongoing research at the Hereditary Research Laboratory, headed by Prof. Moien Kanaan, entitled:
“TP53 missense allele predisposing to high risk of breast cancer but not pediatric cancers”
Her lecture highlighted the importance of clinical approaches in managing pediatric cancer cases carrying partial-loss mutations in the TP53 gene and adopting updated surveillance approaches. Findings showed that such mutations may predispose individuals to breast cancer rather than to Li-Fraumeni syndrome that is usually associated with specific cancer types and early-age onset. The study further emphasized that the Palestinian founder allele “TP53 R181C” is the most common among Palestinian women at elevated risk of developing breast cancer.
