Bethlehem University Celebrates Christmas Tree Lighting, Spreading Hope and Community Spirit

Bethlehem University marked the beginning of the Christmas season with a joyful and hope-filled tree lighting celebration on Thursday, 4 December 2025. Organized by the Deanship of Students, the event brought together students, faculty, and staff in a moment that highlighted unity, gratitude, and the enduring mission of the University.

The program opened with a spirited performance by the Terra Sancta Scout Troop – Bethlehem, followed by reflections from Brother Peter Iorlano, FSC, Vice President for Human Resource, who reminded the community that Christmas is a time of renewal and shared humanity. He emphasized that the Christmas tree, evergreen despite the seasons, symbolizes resilience, hope, and the call to be a source of light for others.

The tree lighting was carried out by Brother Peter, Student Senate President George Ghanem, and student with disability representative Karim Abu Ayyash, symbolizing inclusivity and the University’s commitment to ensuring that every student feels seen and valued.

During the gathering in the auditorium, Dr. Mohammad Awad, Dean of Students, reaffirmed Bethlehem University’s mission to provide an environment grounded in compassion, solidarity, and transformative education. He emphasized that moments like this celebration reflect the spirit of a student community determined to rise above challenges and contribute to a better future for Palestine.

The celebration featured musical performances by the University’s Wajd Musical group led by Dr. Odeh Rishmawi and a spiritual reflection on the meaning of Christmas by Fr. Garrett Gundlach, Assistant Coordinator in the Institutional Values Department. The University’s Tarweedeh Dabkeh Troupe also presented two traditional dance pieces, adding a rich cultural dimension to the evening.

The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer activity and the distribution of gifts and chocolates, filling the hall with warmth and joy.

For Bethlehem University, the Christmas season is a renewed call to uphold its mission of educating future leaders grounded in service, peace, and justice. Celebrations like this one reflect the University’s commitment to nurturing hope, especially in times when it is needed most.
