Simon Awad, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and minor in Biology from Bethlehem University in 1992, has emerged as a leading voice and active force in environmental conservation and the global movement for eco-justice. Following his graduation, Awad has dedicated his life to stewardship, education, and high-level advocacy, making a significant impact across Palestine and the wider West Asia region.
Awad serves as the Executive Director of the Environmental Education Center (EEC), a key institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). In this influential role, he guides the EEC’s mission to promote environmental education, advocacy, and proactive efforts in care for creation, eco-justice, and climate justice within the Palestinian context.
His work involves successfully developing policies and projects both regionally and internationally, and ensuring Palestinian environmental legislation aligns with global conventions. Furthermore, Awad is a recognized ornithologist and conservationist, having established some of the first bird ringing stations in Palestine to support biodiversity research along the Great Rift Valley flyway.
Awad’s influence extends to the global stage through his involvement with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). As the Chair of the IUCN National Committee in Palestine, he plays a vital role in coordinating national conservation efforts. His commitment to collaborative and strategic conservation was recently recognized with his election as a regional councilor for West Asia on the prestigious IUCN Council.
